Sivers Mechanism for Gluons

چکیده

Recent experiments performed by the HERMES collaboration have demonstrated that a small but nonzero Sivers mechanism for transverse single-spin asymmetries exists [1]. Although the presence of such effects has been conjectured long ago [2], only more recent studies [3] have clarified the role of final and initial state interactions as a source of such T-odd asymmetries at the parton level and have thus demonstrated that a nonzero Sivers mechanism is possible in QCD. Following these insights, several model estimates for the Sivers asymmetry have been made [4] but only few theoretical constraints exist regarding the anticipated magnitude or even the sign of the resulting asymmetries in QCD. The main purpose of this letter is to derive a constraint on the Sivers mechanism for gluons. For the final (initial) state interactions, previous results for the Sivers mechanism for quarks can be summarized in a relatively compact form by means parton densities with T − odd contributions. In the case of unintegrated quark densities one finds [5, 6, 7]

Transverse single spin asymmetries in photon production

Transverse single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive reactions are now considered to be directly related to the transverse momentum kT of the fundamental partons involved in the process. We find that the ideal probe to extract information on the gluon Sivers function is the transverse SSA of prompt photon production pp → γX, at large pT . The following related processes, pp → γ + jet + X, pp →...

Recent results from the STAR spin program at RHIC

The STAR experiment uses polarized p+p collisions at RHIC to determine the contributions to the spin of the proton from gluon spin and from orbital angular momentum of the quarks and gluons. Selective STAR measurements of the longitudinal double spin asymmetry for inclusive jet and inclusive hadron production are presented here. In addition, we report measurements of the transverse spin asymmet...

Checking the Burkardt sum rule for the Sivers function by model calculations

The Sivers mechanism gives rise to a non-zero average transverse momentum of partons inside a transversely polarized target. According to a sum rule of Burkardt this transverse momentum vanishes when summing over all partons. We explicitly check the Burkardt sum rule by means of one-loop calculations for a quark target in perturbative QCD and for a diquark spectator model of the nucleon. In bot...

Color entanglement for azimuthal asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process.

In the resummation of collinear gluons emitted together with active partons from the hadrons in the Drell-Yan process, effects of color entanglement become important when the transverse directions are taken into account. It is then no longer possible to write the cross section as the convolution of two soft correlators and a hard part. We show that the color entanglement introduces additional c...

HERMES Measurements of Collins and Sivers Asymmetries from a transversely polarised Hydrogen Target

Azimuthal single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in semi-inclusive electroproduction of πmesons and charged K-mesons in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons on a transversely polarised hydrogen target were observed. Significant SSA amplitudes for both the Collins and the Sivers mechanism are presented for the full data set recorded with transverse target polarisation at the HERMES experi...
